About Me and My Work
About Me and My Work
About Dinah Hewson and her work
Born in 1976, I grew up in Leicester and graduated in Fine Art from University of Wales, Cardiff in 2000. I taught art in secondary schools for 20 years, as well as maintaining my art practice. Moving to Solihull in 2011 and starting a family, I have a busy life keeping those plates spinning!
In the large, busy urban sprawl of the West Midlands where I live, much of my work is based on the canals and parks which I feel are places of sanctuary for me. One recurring subject has been the Grand Union Canal across changing seasons. Since its industrial function became obsolete, it’s transformed into a traffic-free refuge for humans and for wildlife alike.
Studying for my Masters degree at the city centre location of the Birmingham School of Art, my recent subject matter has become more urban. In addition to the inner city sections of canal, I photograph stairs, bridges, alleyways, and underpasses; collecting images which inform my paintings and installations.
On the MA course, I experimented with performance and role play; photographing and filming myself in the locations I used for painting. Then I became interested in how moving images projected onto paintings opened up new dimensions of physical and emotional space. This led to some intensive learning about video editing and the creation of a 3 part film for my final show.
In addition to my video installations, I am currently painting in watercolour for its excellent properties for depicting light; although for my works on canvas and board, I use a technique of painting in oils over layers of acrylic. I also have an instinct to experiment with mixed-media materials and processes such as stencilling and collagraph printing.
I have exhibited work at galleries including The Old Printworks, Balsall Heath, Birmingham School of Art, RBSA Gallery, Moseley Exchange, and The Core Gallery, Solihull.
