Video Installations

These videos show my installation work in action, as presented for exhibition. The height of the painting frames are approximately 200cm, and the paintings are 150-170cm wide. The projector is placed on a plinth behind the painting, (approx. 1 metre from the painting) and projects the film onto the tracing paper screen. There are speakers behind the screen for the sound. I use USB sticks with a small media player connected to the projector, and the films play on a continuous loop.

Once Upon A Time By The Grand Union 2025

This is a 10 minute film in three parts, with each part playing consecutively on each of 3 paintings. I shot it entirely on location by the canal in Olton, Solihull and Digbeth, Birmingham, from May-July 2025.

Credits Music and film clip credits (Please note that this work was exhibited at my MA final exhibition, and so as an education context, it was exempt from usual copyright rules.)

Spaghetti Junction Wilderness 2025

I made this installation when I left the MA course and wanted to get my own projector and editing software to continue making films without technician help!

The film is a meditation on our need for nature within our urban environment. I shot footage of Spaghetti Junction as well as my walks on the canal towpath and woods in autumn. I experimented with a visual merging of the two very different locations with an emphasis on the colours and textures; water, leaves, graffiti and concrete.

Originally, I tried adding various pieces of music to score the film, including creating a track using an AI generator to avoid copyright infringement. However, when it came to showing the work for the Emergence exhibition, I decided to remove the sound altogether and let the visuals speak for themselves.

Directed, edited by, and featuring Dinah Hobbs.

On The Inside Out 2026

For my third film project, I wanted to learn how to write, record and edit dialogue successfully. This is one of the trickier skills in filmmaking; consistency and continuity between takes is important, as is being very organised when editing the footage. The objective is to present conversations between actors that sound natural and make sense!

I also wanted to practice filming in visually exciting locations – Birmingham City Centre in this case. In busy public places, filming as an amateur can be challenging, and we had to take care not to show faces of people who hadn’t consented to appear in the film!

The story was created mainly as a vehicle for filming actors moving in and out of the frame in interesting ways, and I designed the orange and black costumes to look striking within colourful locations I had scouted before shooting.

Again, I used AI to score the film, and wrote my own lyrics for the song which AI set to music. This approach ensured I could show the work in a public exhibition with no copyright violations.
