Fine Art Masters Degree Projects 2024-25: Advanced Practice 2
Advanced Practice 2
Canal bridges have been one of my ongoing artistic fascinations for quite a while; so for my second independent project, I wanted to investigate the potential of a bridge as a location for psychological drama by experimenting further with photography and film. Inventing my alter ego of a ghostly woman from the Wild West frontier in semester 1 had been fun, so I decided to try filming myself as a silhouette with my cowboy hat and toy rifle. I already had the idea of a shadow motif from taking still photographs of myself in the hat, so I learned how to use the professional video camera in the studio to gather some live action footage of my shadow acting out various scenes. As a complete newbie to filming and editing, using the shadow was much simpler than trying to make a realistic film! I had completed a large painting of the space underneath a bridge which I imported into Adobe Premier Pro software as a backdrop, then superimposed my shadow film over it to look as if a ghost was haunting the area. I didn't find it easy to use PremierPro, so it's a very short film, but I was excited by the appeal of video as a fine art medium and resolved to practice using it for my final project. You can watch my practice film and the film I submitted for assessment below.
