About me

Having graduated in Fine Art back in 2000, and qualifying as a teacher in 2005, I have spent much of the time since then teaching art in secondary schools. So after 20 odd years in the classroom, I am now developing my own art practice full time.

About my work

My focus is landscape and our relationship with nature; whether its children clambering on trees, or adults basking in dappled sunlight, I like to photograph and paint images which recall the vital experiences we get from being outside in the natural world. As I’m based in the large, busy urban sprawl of the West Midlands, places like canals and parks are places of sanctuary.

I have photographed, drawn and painted the Grand Union Canal by my home many times, in every season. Since its industrial function became obsolete It’s now a traffic-free refuge for humans and for wildlife alike. Like many artists, I enjoy exploring interesting juxtapositions between the man-made amongst nature; that ever-popular theme.

I’m also fascinated by the challenge of representing all that complexity; the patterns and textures of trees and water; how to represent sunshine or ice.

I like to combine abstraction and realism in the same composition; give emphasis to beautiful leaf shapes, and play with negative and positive space. Although I mostly work with a technique of painting in oils over layers of acrylic, I have an instinct to experiment with mixed-media materials and processes such as stencilling and collagraph printing. I often don’t have a definitive vision as to how the finished work will look, but I aim to learn from every artwork; anything which “works” gets taken forward into the next piece and developed and improved.

Sales information

My original paintings are mixed media/oil on hardboard unless described otherwise, and most are for sale unless marked NFS. I’ve also noted which are framed. If interested, please contact me to find out about delivery costs.

A more affordable way of buying my work is to purchase a quality giclée print – see the shop for details.
